A much loved community space has finally been safeguarded from development after the Gloucestershire County Council finally agreed terms with the Town Council over the sale of the Victoria (Purley) Road playing field.

When the County Council listed the site for sale in 2014 there had been concerns that the field would become yet another site for housing development.

In 2015 local residents and councillors successfully lobbied Cirencester Town Council to consider purchasing the site to ensure it remained in community hands.

The process formally concluded on 23rd March.

Local Lib Dem County and District Councillor, Joe Harris commented:

“I’m thrilled that after years of negotiations the sale of the Victoria Road playing field to the Town Council has finally been concluded.

“It would have been a crime if another green space was lost to development, I’ve been working with local residents to avoid the field just being used to build more executive homes. We’ve secured a real win as the land can now only be used for recreational and community use. The field regularly hosts Cirencester’s bonfire night and it’s great that this will be able to continue.”

I’d like to thank everyone involved in making this sale a reality and look forward to seeing what plans Cirencester Town Council have for the site.”
